Visa USA’s chief executive on Wednesday outlined a multimarket strategy for prepaid cards, while announcing that convenience-store titan 7-Eleven Inc. has joined Visa’s fledgling prepaid reload network and calling for greater efforts to educate regulators about the unique characteristics of prepaid plastic. “There’s an incredible opportunity [in the prepaid market],” said John Philip Coghlan in addressing an audience of prepaid card issuers, processors, and program managers in Las Vegas at the Prepaid Card Expo trade show. “Visa wants to be a partner, a point man, in some cases a flak catcher in driving the industry forward.”

- PG&E Residential Customers Can Now Pay Bills Online With Visa Cards ( February 16, 2007 )
Paying monthly utility bills just got easier. Pacific Gas and Electric Company's 5.2 million residential customers no longer need to write a check and lick a stamp to pay their monthly utility bills. PG&E is now accepting Visa online to make automatic monthly payments or one-time payments using Visa-branded debit, credit or prepaid cards. Residential customers can also make one-time payments by calling 800-743-5000.
- Nomad, Europe's Leading Card Processor, Exhibits at Prepaid Card Expo 2007 ( February 12, 2007 )
Exhibiting for the first time at Prepaid Card Expo is Nomad, Europe's leading prepaid card processor. Despite the fact that Nomad does not operate (and is not seeking to operate) in the USA the company is using Prepaid Card Expo to raise awareness of its pan-European capability and the success it is achieving with different programme managers in that area. - Greenhill SAVP Completes Investment with a $5 million (February 2, 2007)
Greenhill SAVP announced that it has made a $5 million investment in Serious, Inc. (“Serious”) as part of a $14 million round of financing. Greenhill SAVP co-led the investment with North Hill Ventures. Serious, based in New York, is a privately held provider of digital publishing and marketing services with offices in New York, London and Singapore.
- Elan Financial Services and Sapphire Mobile Systems Partner to Offer Mobile Banking and Payments (Feb. 28, 2007)
Elan Financial Services has partnered with Sapphire Mobile Systems to conduct a mobile banking and payments pilot. Elan has integrated with the Phire Mobile Debit Network(TM) to provide customers with highly secure, instant access to their PayCard accounts via any mobile handset. The Phire network utilizes simple text messaging or SMS (Short Message Service) to function and does not require new hardware or software upgrades for customers. SMS is available on virtually any mobile handset, regardless of phone type or carrier affiliation.
- Citi Acquires Ecount, Inc. (February 28, 2007)
Citi markets and banking today announced that it has acquired Ecount, Inc., the leading provider of corporate prepaid card solutions, based in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Ecount’s products will be integrated into Citi’s global transaction services business, strengthening the firm’s cash management platform for corporations, financial institutions and governments. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
